A gutter guard covers the open top of the gutter with a surface that lets water through and holds debris out. Leaves, twigs and seeds dry on top and blow away, while rain passes through the mesh or perforations into the trough. Installed at the right angle and fastened to the gutter (never under the shingles), a good guard keeps the system flowing through fall leaf drop and spring seed drop alike, and it reduces the standing debris that turns into ice dams in January.

Debris decides the guard. Micro-mesh, a fine stainless steel screen on an aluminum frame, blocks pine needles, maple seeds and even shingle grit, and it is what we recommend for most wooded lots in Mercer, Middlesex and Monmouth counties. Perforated aluminum covers cost less and handle large oak and sycamore leaves well, but seeds and needles can slip through. Foam and brush inserts are cheap but trap seeds and need to be cleaned themselves, so we rarely recommend them.

A clogged gutter backs water under the first course of shingles and soaks the fascia behind it; the overflow lands at the foundation, where a single storm can dump hundreds of gallons against the basement wall. Guards go on clean, properly pitched gutters. We clear the system, flush downspouts and fix loose hangers first.

Guards are cut to each run, fitted at the correct angle for water flow, and screwed to the gutter lip, not slipped under shingles.

We run water over the roof edge to confirm flow through the guard and show you how the system sheds debris.
What determines the cost of gutter guards?
Gutter guard pricing is quoted per linear foot and depends on:
- Guard type: screens cost least, micro-mesh most
- Total linear feet and gutter size (5" or 6")
- Roof height and access
- Any cleaning, re-pitching or repair needed before the guards go on

Gutter guard questions we hear most
Do gutter guards mean I never clean my gutters again?
Almost. Micro-mesh guards eliminate routine cleaning, but every few years it is worth brushing the surface off and checking the downspouts. Screens and perforated covers need a light clean-off after heavy leaf drop.
Will guards work with pine needles?
Only micro-mesh reliably stops pine needles. Perforated covers and screens let needles through, which is why we ask about your trees before recommending a product.
Do gutter guards cause ice dams?
No. Clogged gutters do. Guards keep the trough clear so meltwater can drain instead of freezing in place. Ice on the guard surface is normal and melts with the roof.
Can you put guards on my existing gutters?
Yes, as long as the gutters are sound and properly pitched. We check both during the free assessment and price any repairs separately.
How long do gutter guards last?
Aluminum and stainless micro-mesh guards typically last as long as the gutters themselves, 20 years or more. Foam and plastic products degrade in a few seasons, which is why we don’t install them.
