What a clogged gutter does to a house
A gutter’s only job is to move roof runoff to a downspout and away from the foundation. A 2,000 sq ft roof sheds roughly 1,200 gallons of water in a one-inch storm. When leaves block the trough, that water backs up under the first course of shingles, soaks the fascia board behind the gutter, and spills over the front edge to pool against the foundation.
The symptoms show up months later: peeling paint and soft wood on the fascia, streaks on siding, a damp basement corner after heavy rain, and in winter, ice dams that lift shingles. Every one of those repairs costs more than keeping the gutter clear.
When guards are worth the investment
- Mature trees within 30 feet of the roofline: oak tassels, maple seeds and pine needles are the debris that overwhelms open gutters.
- Two-story or steep roofs where cleaning means ladder work you would rather not do twice a year.
- Homes that already needed two or more cleanings a year; guards usually pay for themselves in 3–5 seasons.
- Properties you don’t visit often, such as rentals or shore houses, where a clog can go unnoticed for weeks.
Which guard type fits New Jersey debris
Not all guards handle the same debris. Perforated aluminum covers stop leaves but let maple seeds and pine needles through. Micro-mesh guards, a fine stainless screen on an aluminum frame, block needles, seeds and shingle grit while still passing heavy rain, and they are what we recommend under pines and maples. Foam inserts and brush guards are inexpensive but trap seeds and need cleaning themselves.
Whatever the type, the guard has to match the gutter: a 6-inch gutter needs a 6-inch guard, and the pitch must be right first. A guard on a sagging gutter just hides the problem.
