Gutter Services in Princeton, NJ

Princeton asks more of a gutter installer than any other town we work in: 19th-century homes with historic-district reviews, roofs three stories up, and some of the heaviest tree canopy in Mercer County. It is also where half round and copper make up a real share of our work instead of an occasional request.

Historic homes, half round and copper

In the Mercer Hill, Jugtown and Witherspoon-Jackson historic districts, and along the older streets off Nassau Street and Hodge Road, a K-style aluminum gutter simply looks wrong on a Federal, Victorian or Colonial Revival facade, and in designated districts the Historic Preservation Commission may not approve one. We install half round gutters in aluminum for homeowners who want the profile at a reasonable cost, and in copper for those who want a system that will patina and outlast the roof. Round downspouts, cast-style hangers and copper leader heads are all available.

Because half round carries somewhat less water than a K-style of the same width, Princeton’s steep slate and cedar roofs often need 6-inch half round or an extra downspout on the long runs. We size that from the roof area, not from what was there before.

Trees and gutter guards in Princeton

Princeton’s tree canopy is the reason gutter guards are the single most requested service here. The oaks, tulip poplars, beeches and white pines that shade the Western Section, Riverside and the streets around the Institute Woods drop leaves from September through December, tulip poplar seeds and pine needles through the spring, and pollen strings that mat in open gutters in May. Only micro-mesh reliably keeps that mix out. On half round systems we fit guards made for the rounded profile so the look is preserved; on K-style we use the same stainless micro-mesh we install county-wide.

Newer Princeton neighborhoods

Not all of Princeton is historic. The 1960s–1990s homes in Littlebrook, Riverside and the developments off Rosedale Road and Cherry Hill Road are conventional two-story colonials and contemporaries, and they get the same seamless .032 aluminum systems we install across Mercer County, usually 6-inch given the roof areas and the tree load. Many of these homes are also on well-shaded lots where a fall cleaning plan makes more sense than guards.

Historic Preservation Commission and township notes

Exterior changes to properties in Princeton’s historic districts, including gutter material and profile, may need HPC review. We provide the material specifications, profile drawings and color samples the application requires and have experience with what the commission approves. Outside the districts, gutter replacement does not require a permit.

Working around slate, cedar and copper

Princeton’s older roofs are slate, cedar shake or standing-seam metal far more often than asphalt, and each changes how we work. Slate cannot be walked on; we hang gutters from ladders with standoffs and, on tall elevations, from a lift. Cedar shakes shed fine debris that only micro-mesh keeps out. Copper roofs and flashing must never touch bare aluminum, because the galvanic reaction eats the aluminum in a few winters, so on those homes we use copper gutters or isolate the aluminum with compatible hangers and coated fasteners. Estimates for historic-district homes come with the profile drawing and material specification the Historic Preservation Commission asks for, and we schedule installation after approval so nothing has to be redone. Most Princeton installations take a day; copper half round on a three-story Victorian takes two.
